Cheap Transportation in Manila
With the rising cost of fares in jeepneys, buses and tricycles, a convenient way to go around in some parts of Manila is by way of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), and Metro-Rail Transit (MRT). The LRT 1 consists of the 15 km elevated railway system servicing the route Monumento in the City of Caloocan passing through Rizal Avenue and Taft Avenue in Manila to the end station Baclaran in Pasay City. On the other hand, the MRT is a 16.9 kilometer route on Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue passing through the cities of Quezon, Makati, Mandaluyong and Pasay.
From our place near the Monumento area, I have to ride a jeepney to take me to the Monumento station, which cost me P 8.00 or approximately $0.2 (1-kilometer stretch). I have to ride the LRT from Monumento station to Gil Puyat station (14th station out of 18 stations), 20 minute ride costing P15.00 ( approx $0.35 ). If I were to take the taxi from our place covering the same route, that’s P 140.00.
Taking the LRT is cheap transportation, considering I was able to save time and money and distance of my trip covered around 10 kilometers. For more convenience I buy a stored value ticket worth P 100 (approx $2.3) , which is about 4 or 5 rides, to avoid long queue at the ticket booths during rush hours.
Now if only the LRT would have a more extensive coverage of the Metropolis…
